Garden Design

I think it’s really important to have a clear process when designing a garden. It means that my customers can understand what steps are involved and what you can expect from me. I’ve outlined the key phases below and I’m happy to talk through this process as part of the consultation.

Phase 1: Consultation

The consultation is my first visit to you and your garden, to discuss a potential design project. It's a chance to chat over a coffee, I'll ask you different questions and you can share ideas, and practical needs. Following this consultation I will send you a proposal which includes the project brief, what I'll be providing, my fees and terms of engagement.

Phase 2: Concepts

Once you're happy with the brief and my fees and terms we can start the next stage which begins with a site survey. If you have a large or complex garden I may suggest a topographical survey is completed. Otherwise I will measure your garden, take a soil sample and lots of photos, videos and details of your garden. From the survey and assessment I will create a 2D Concept design, with supporting sketches and mood board and I will come back to present this to you.

Phase 3: Masterplan

Once you have approved the Concept Design I create a Masterplan. This takes everything we've agreed at the concept stage and develops a final garden design, with details on materials, providing samples and key plants, such as trees, to provide a style of planting. I will present this to you and walk you through the details.

Phase 4: Technical Details

Once the Masterplan is approved I can produce further technical and design intent drawings, which help you and your chosen landscaper understand elements within the masterplan.

Phase 5: Planting Plan

I will create a planting plan for your garden design. Based on 'right plant, right place' approach this will detail every plant and its location in your garden. Alongside the plan, I provide a plant schedule which details information on the plant and its flowering period to ensure seasonal interest. I can source and purchase plants on your behalf, providing you with estimates and arranging deliveries.

Phase 6: Build

Once your chosen landscaper is in place I can be available to meet with you and your landscaper to talk through the garden design and I can also be available during the build phase at agreed stages.

Phase 7: Planting & Care

Once the landscaping is complete or at a stage where it's safe and practical for planting to commence I prefer to complete planting myself, setting out the plants and ensuring the soil has been prepped.

Please note depending on the time of year it's often the case that planting is done in stages as plants, trees, shrubs and bulbs become available.

After Completion

Once all the plants are in and the landscaping is completed, it's the start of your new garden and time for you to enjoy it.

To ensure it continues to bloom I can create a bespoke maintenance plan for your garden and I also like to pop back to see how its settling in.
